Young leaves sprout all over the forest and sparkle in shades of emerald and chartreuse, shrouded in a soft cloud of early morning mist. The rain blessed the earth and the returning sun urges the ferns and leaves to unfold while the forest floor glows in a carpet of bright green moss as far as the eye can see. A thin layer of golden hued evergreen pollen covers every flower, leaf and branch, like the woodland fairies secretly sprinkled their magic all over the forest.
Leaving our somewhat cultivated woodland garden behind, I enter a portal to another world. A wild forest, left to its own devices. Fallen trees arch high over piles of decaying branches offering homes to critters and mushrooms, giving themselves back to the thriving eco-system.
There is a secret path that follows a shallow creek and weaves through the forest up and up and up over sharp stones and windswept trees, until it reaches a clearing bursting with swaying grasses, veronica, buttercups and elder trees. Along the way the only sounds are tiny bubbling waterfalls and cheery birdsong.
I sit by the babbling brook for a while, letting the water run over my hands and feet, dusting off winter’s emotional cobwebs. What a privilege it is to have access to these beautiful spots right at my back door. What a joy it is for me to share it all with you, wherever you may live.
Lately I find myself being in constant awe of nature’s wonders. Every time I see a robin foraging for its nest or mice running to collect whatever fell down from the bird feeder I hung up or neon green spruce tips reaching for new growth, worms rummaging through the compost turning waste into gold, teeny tiny seedlings growing to bear heavy fruits in only a few months… All I can think of is, what a time to be alive to witness it all.
Love,
Alex
What a beautiful escape! I have similar quiet, hidden woodlands to wander here in south east england. I am forever grateful for the opportunity to lose myself in their mossy embrace. I love that last sentiment too....what a time to be alive indeed. It's a huge priviledge to bare witness to Springs unfurling and the activity of those inhabiting the natural landscape. Thank you for sharing
This was so beautiful 😍🥹
